Vortigaunt Knowledge

Try to write as much as you can without dragging it out just for the sake of word count, show us that you understand the Faction and that you want in.

What is a vortigaunt?:

Vortigaunts are alien creatures from another planet. Their physical features are non-standard for bipedal life forms, with digitigraded legs built for running, three arms and three small crimson red eyes surronding a large cyclop-like eye. They are creatures that are masterful at hunting, and the slave collars limit their physical potential as well as stopping access to the Vortessence. Vortigaunts are able to wield a supernatural and multiuniversal force known as the Vortessence. The Vortigaunts believe that every creature is made and connected with Vortessence, yet only certain species such as the Nihilianths and Vortigaunts can access it's power. Vortigaunts are intelligent and sentient creatures. They have long lifespans that usually span a millenia while some masterful users of the Vortessence can manipulate their lifespan to more than two or three thousand years.

How do vortigaunts act?:

Vortigaunts are connected to one another through the Vortessence, they treat one another as if they were family. They act peacefully and seem to never show anger or fear to other lifeforms. They treat sentient creatures with respect or kindness as long as said creature does not show aggression. Vortigaunts are rarely the first attacker and prefer to resolve conflicts diplomatically to avoid vortal coils being broken. However, Vortigaunts show no regard for hunting non-sentient creatures, and they can develop a sever distaste towards species that enslave them or harass them.

What is the vortessence?:

The Vortessence is a multi-dimensional 'hivemind-like' force which allows for users to sense each other's existence and sometimes emotions. The Vortessence has a multitude of uses and the user of the Vortessence can apply it in both combat, utility and medical uses. The Vortessence is capable of manipulating matter as shown in the healing of wounds, and is also capable of transferring energy from the Vortessence to electrical appliances. The Vortessence is highly sought after by the Combine, using it as an energy source for the vault in Half-life: Alyx. The Vortessence can also be found in non-sentient creatures such as Ancient Antlion Guardians, with their body absorbing the Vortessence, empowering the creature slightly due to it guarding the Antlion Extract. This shows that the Vortessence

How does vortigese work?:

Vortigese is the native language of the Vortigaunts and they communicate via flux-shifting which shows specific words that are filled with intent and emotion as well as the contextual meaning of the words spoken. To understand Vortigese you must first have access to the Vortessence which humans and other species lack as they do not have vortal chords.

What do the shackles & collar on a Biotic do?:

The restraints the Vortigaunts wear restrict their physical movement, preventing them from running or stretching, if they do it will cause them great pain and rip their body. The Collar itself is what prevents the Vortigaunts from accessing the Vortessence. The collar severly dampens the Vortigaunts link to the Vortessence and any sort of meddling from an unprofessional would cause the Collar to explode, killing the Vortigaunt and anyone near it.

How do Vortigaunts act towards other factions?:

Civilian:

The Vortigaunt show respect towards normal civilians, even if they are aggressive. They act calmly and diplomatically, sounding peaceful and approachable. The Vortigaunt may even offer the Citizen help should they need it.

Civil Protection:

While in Collars and Shackles, the Vortigaunts greatly respect and admire this faction, being careful with their words as to not sound overbearing or ignorant, trying to avoid provoking them. When released The Vortigaunts show a distaste of the Civil Protection. This distaste varies with each Vortigaunt, as some are more grudge-bearing than others. The Vortigaunts age also affects their behaviour, the younger ones are seen more aggressive and hateful of the CCA than the aged Vortigaunts who learned to pity the CPs who are a slave to themselves.

OTA:

The Vortigaunts rarely interact with OTA, with most Vortigaunts viewing them as non-sentient robots with no emotion or capability for mercy. They would attempt to avoid OTA.

Antlion:

This faction is commonly hunted by Vortigaunts. The Vortigaunts and Antlions have a long history, as Antlions were found on their homeworld as well, being seen as worthy prey and a challenge to kill. As such, Antlions were commonly used for Game and some Vortigaunts took trophies from them as respect to the Antlions that were killed.

Xen

This faction is regarded as animals to the Vortigaunts, excluding the Sentient species such as the Alien Grunt. They normally don't pay that much attention to them, unless they actively show aggression.

In-Character Info

Vortigaunt Name:

Malan'Akam

Vortigaunt Age:

812 Years Old

Does your vortigaunt have any special characteristics that could be unique or stand out from the rest?:

Yes. The Vortigaunt has a different skin than others, appearing as a slight greenish-yellow tint that occured as a genetic mutation during an interrupted summoning ritual. As well as being much taller than his kin, standing at over 7'2''! (woo)

Your vortigaunt's detailed backstory:

0 - 400 Years after Creation

What is to be Malan'Akam and numerous others are surrounded, by a group of chanting vortigaunts arounded a cultist-like ritual, with offerings layed in the shape of a circle. The Vortessence itself, shown as a light-green gas, being woven like tapestry into the shape of the Vortigaunts. The Vortessence condenses further and further. Bone, flesh and blood are formed and the to-be vortigaunts feel for the first time. They all feel a mystical and enlightening sensation, for the first time they feel a connection to the Vortessence. However, during the formation of the vortal links, a roar echo'd throughout the tribe. A gigantic beast broke through the wall of the primitive hut as if it was air. It charged towards the Vortigaunt closest to it, and in a tenth of a second it already had it's feral claws and rabid teeth, causing the Ritual to overload with Vortessence. It was only due to the Shaman's quick reaction time that the ritual was managed to be stopped before it killed the new generation of Vortigaunts. After which, the beast was killed nearly as quick as it entered. However, the damage was done and the sudden interruption caused the younglings to experience strange mutations, with all having overloaded vortal links.

To call these particular vortigaunts' developmental growth stunted would be inaccurate and an understatement, marked with an overwhelming and unbearable power near the end of their creation has made the new generation bed-ridden, their bodies fragmented after the ritual would take hundreds of years of recovery to even think about practising the Vortessence. Malan'Akam himself was also affected by the Overloading of Vortessence, his body was an entirely different tint than his kin, a ghastly and pukish yellow that would sicken any normal human. The Shaman who created these Vortigaunts was guilt-ridden, blaming it upon himself that he caused it and failed to protect the ritual accordingly. The shaman tried everything he could, consulting Elders and Sages to find some method to undo the damage caused, and only after searching for near 200 years did he find a clue. The restoration of the Vortal links would be expensive and tiring, requiring the sacrifice of many Warriors to retrieve the materials required to save the generation. A large squad of Vortigaunt Warriors was sent out to retrieve the 'Extract' from an abandoned nest, guarded by a lone Ancient Antlion Guardians that were bound by their now long dead queen to guard the 'Extract'.

The Vortigaunt Warriors incursion was bloody, the Ancient Guardian ambushing them, resulting in the loss of a dozen Vortigaunts, yet the battle was barely a victory, with only the Leading Warrior and a few others surviving and retrieving the Extract. Upon returning to the Town, they mourned for nearly a week. Every Vortigaunt in a tribe was dearly loved and each summoning ritual was costly. After the mourning, the Village Elder used the Extract, along side the Shaman's to fix the damaged Vortal Cords of the New Generation. Upon the Elder using the Extract, everything around the Elder looked surreal, his surroundings now looked mythical in appearance. The Shaman and Elder surronded the Younglings, using their Enhanced Vortessence to repair their bodies and Vortal Link. Yet the ability to create matter was costly, straining their link to the Vortessence in exchange for this short-term power. However, the recovery of the younglings was a success, and they could finally use the Vortessence, albeit clumsily at first.

400-800
The previous younglings would now be considered disciplies, being trained the numerous ways of the Vortessence, with some training to be advanced wielders of the Vortessence and others opting for more aggressive and combat suited uses of the Vortessence. These two paths being named as the Warrior and Sage by Malan'Akam's tribe. During this time of training, Malan'Akam joined the Path of the Sage, learning to use the Vortessence in both combat and utility. For example, healing wounds, lighting fires and manipulating the Vortessence to move objects. However, Malan'Akam was not a the 'perfect Vortigaunt' He would oftenly sneak out of his Village with a group of close-kin to hunt for game, all members finding it humorous and exciting. One day, when Malan and his group went hunting, they noticed large and quaking portals opening in the sky near their village. Malan'Akam rushed back to his village, finding nothing but littered corpses of his kin, with others missing. He ran into the Elder's hut, running over to the near-dead Elder, trying to help him. Yet neither he or the kin he returned with could do anything. As the Elder's last act, he opened a Portal to the Xen, claiming it to be their only option of escape. As soon as Malan entered the Portal, he was quickly captured by the Nihilianth and enslaved a long side the rest of his kin.

800-Present
Serving Under the Nihilianth was short compared to his life, however it appeared to last forever in Malan's mind. He served along side his kin as part of the Nihilianth's slave army, being one of the few to Invade the Planet of Earth. He himself took many human lives, yet he had little or no remorse for it, the slave collar placed upon him by the Nihilianth removing most emotions except for loyalty to the Nihilianth.
Upon the destruction of the Nihilianth by the hands of ' The Free Man ', Malan was recalled to reality, managing to stop himself from executing a defenseless woman, then running into a nearby forest. Lost and looking for guidance.

Malan's search for Guidance was only met by Overwatch and Synths capturing him, entering from the hands of one Slave Owner to another, yet he found that it was much more peaceful than the Nihilianth, at least he wasn't used as a combat slave. However, the daily humiliation and beatings he received from both Civil Protection and citizens alike were less than preferrable, leading him to build up a grudge to the xenophobic humans and masked Civil Protection.

Write a detailed roleplay scenario of your choosing that includes your Vortigaunt, their personality and emotions, so that we may see how well you can roleplay:

BIOTIC:C20:77371 would firmly grab the handle of the broom, pushing along loose trash that had been discarded onto the street into a pile. As he did this he would subtly look around him, eventually seeing a human flirting with an uninterested partner.

The man would insult the woman after his advances were denied, going to storm off before noticing the Biotic’s stare.

He stomped towards the Biotic, furious, screaming at it,

“What the fuck are you looking at, freak!”

77371 hadn’t considered the human would be agitated and consider his gaze to be rude, and attempted to correct the miscommunication while looking down, belittling himself.

“We are mistaken. It was not our intention to offend.”

The man shoved the Biotic back, seeing red.

“Shut the fuck up! You think you can speak to me!?”

77371 attempted to steady himself, but he was weak from malnutrition. He falled backwards, his digitrade legs making the fall painful, yet he held in the grunts and tried to gather the energy to stand back up.

“We beg the human to forgive us.”

He looked over toward the Civil Protection unit standing watch, who had started to approach the man interrupting them.

The man saw this, and began to swiftly stroll away. The Civil Protection looked at the Biotic supporting himself with the broom.

“<:: Get back to work, pervert. Haha. ::>”

The Civil Protection Officer chuckled, then moving over towards a group of humans.

77371 returned to his spot, glad that the officer hadn't smacked him. He then began sweeping the concrete floor, sweeping tid-bits of trash near a trash pile.

ACCEPTED.

Nothing much needs to be said from me, your application is very good. However, one thing I was hesitant about is your Vortigaunt's height. You will have to properly roleplay your Vortigaunt's physical imperfection accordingly, such as joint issues & back pains consistently. Failure to do so, and continuous offences may result in your whitelist being revoked for FailRPing.
